You can throw a rock from the back door of High Ridge Spirits Distillery in Stills Crossroads and hit an old moonshine still busted up by “the law” in years past.

The two rusty barrels with gashes as thick as your leg lie beside one of the many pure-water springs of Bullock County.  Union Springs, the county seat, got its name from the 27 legendary springs in the county.

Some say making moonshine is more art than craft, but it starts with good water.

Master Distiller Jamie Ray moved to Stills Crossroads looking for a good place to raise his horses, but what he found was an ideal place for ‘branch farming,” as Clyde May, one of the iconic Bullock County moonshine-makers called it.

Soon after arriving, Ray began hearing stories about moonshine and whiskey making in Bullock County.

With 22 years of experience in micro brewing under his belt, the idea for an artisan distillery began to form in his mind.

Ray went to work developing his moonshine recipe using the purity of the local water, rye, cane sugar, and his knowledge of hand-crafted brewing to develop Alabama ‘Shine.

High Ridge Spirits attained their license in early 2013 and became the first legal distillery in Alabama since Prohibition in 1915.

Ray set up shop in the horse barn on his property.  With metal tanks and a hybrid pot still as shiny as new hubcaps, the spotless concrete floors are constantly cleaned by distillery workers, who no longer have to keep a watch over their shoulders for lawmen with axes coming to bust up their still.
Ray delivered the first 37 cases of his Stills Crossroads Alabama `Shine to the Alabama Beverage Control’s warehouse in Montgomery on October 24, 2013.
